Applying for travel/medical insurance was very easy to do through my local insurance company. All I had to do was give them my contact information and money. It cost $1 per day to get covered for over $300 in medical expenses. I purchased medical coverage for six months. I waited until a week before my departure date to purchase medical insurance. It was recommended that I update my immunization before I traveled to China. There were no required immunizations, so I chose shots I felt would be safe to take. It is also a good idea to read ahead about the area you are going to visit. The Lonely Planet China book helped me figure out what to expect before I entered the China. I was also able to look at the language I was about to experience with that travel book.
