Tips for Americans Planning on Entering Canada

If you are an American citizen and want to enter Canada, all you need is an US passport or other proof of US citizenship. The other proof can be an original or certified birth certificate along with photo identification. If you are an American citizen and are entering Canada from a third country, you must have a valid passport. A visa is not required for a US citizen to stay up to 180 days in Canada. More information can be found on the Americans Entering Canada section of the American Consular Services Information website.

All visitors to Canada should be advised that they need travel medical insurance. So many travelers are under the misguided impression that as Canada has “free” healthcare, they will automatically be able to avail themselves of this, which simply isn’t true. For any non-Canadian who suddenly requires a trip to the emergency room and does not have travel insurance, expect a hefty medical bill!

What extended health care plan do you suggest for non-Canadians entering Canada?
